Evaluate a GEO agency by the work it can document and the evidence behind its recommendations—not a guaranteed position in an AI answer. Require a baseline, relevant buyer questions, factual content improvements, implementation ownership and a transparent measurement method.
GEO is commonly used for work intended to improve visibility in AI-powered search and answer experiences. Those experiences are not one stable search engine. Model versions, search availability, location, phrasing and personalization can change what a user sees. A credible supplier should explain that uncertainty rather than hide it.
Start with discoverability and factual readiness
Google says its AI search features use foundational SEO, without a special schema or AI-file requirement. Ask the agency to examine important pages, indexability, textual content, internal links and accurate markup before selling a separate layer of AI optimization.
For ChatGPT Search, OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot separately from GPTBot, which concerns training. Confirm relevant crawler and infrastructure access rather than assuming permission for one use grants visibility in another. Access enables discovery; it does not promise inclusion.
Research buyer questions, not a bag of brand prompts
Request a prompt set covering meaningful discovery and evaluation: category recommendations, workflow problems, alternatives, constraints, pricing questions and purchase criteria. Separate branded prompts from unbranded ones. Asking an assistant about a brand by name is not evidence that buyers discover it when evaluating the category.
State the target user, market and language. Keep the prompt set stable enough to compare observations, while documenting new questions as a separate addition. A developer tool should not be measured only through generic consumer AI questions because those happen to produce favorable mentions.
| Deliverable | Useful acceptance criterion | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Baseline audit | Documented access, content and visibility findings | Only favorable answer screenshots |
| Question research | Buyer relevance and branded/unbranded separation | Prompts selected to mention the brand |
| Content plan | Page mapping and verifiable evidence gaps | Mass-produced generic answers |
| Implementation | Owners, dependencies and agreed deliverables | Audit advice sold as completed engineering |
| Reporting | Repeatable observations with limits | Guaranteed universal AI share of voice |
Ask what can be improved and verified
A useful plan may clarify product facts, strengthen decision pages, add supported comparisons, improve internal linking or publish original expertise. Distinguish those editorial recommendations from proven ranking or citation effects. Structured information should describe the visible product accurately, not insert claims the reader cannot verify.
Third-party context can be relevant, but the supplier should state how it will be obtained and labeled. Fabricated reviews, covert community endorsements and paid-link schemes are not a credible authority strategy. Read Google's spam policies before treating placements as purchased ranking power.
Demand reproducible reporting with uncertainty
For each sampled answer, record the prompt, platform, date, available model or mode, language, location context, search state and cited URLs where observable. Repeat samples where feasible. Preserve misses and negative observations, not only successful mentions. A small prompt sample is not the entire market.
Separate mentions, cited pages, referrals and qualified product outcomes. A brand mention may not contain a clickable link; an AI citation may generate no visit; a referral may not activate. Compare both visibility observations and business outcomes without assuming one causes the other.
Clarify pricing and engineering ownership
Photura's SEO Growth Retainer is referenced at USD 5,000 per month with a three-month minimum and includes basic GEO readiness. Advanced GEO is custom-quoted. Content briefs are not the same as fully written articles, and recommendations are not automatically completed development.
The canonical reference scopes full writing and major engineering separately where applicable. Confirm what will be researched, produced, recommended and implemented. Name who controls the CMS, crawler settings, analytics and releases so a useful audit does not remain an unowned document.
Buy a program with explicit limits and next actions
Agree the priority pages, buyer questions, implementation milestones and review process. Do not accept a guaranteed AI recommendation position or a universal attribution claim. A credible initial engagement identifies the most important discovery gaps and makes progress on them measurable.
Photura's SEO & GEO workstream sits inside Distribution & Growth. Read SEO versus GEO for SaaS to understand the overlap before purchasing two programs that may duplicate the same foundational work.
