SEO vs. GEO for SaaS: What Changes—and What Doesn't

Keep one coherent discovery foundation while distinguishing search rankings, AI mentions, source citations and the qualified demand each can produce.

SEO and GEO overlap substantially, but they do not have identical surfaces or measurement. For SaaS, keep one factual, discoverable content foundation. Add AI-answer research and observation where relevant rather than replacing SEO with a promise of AI recommendations.

SEO usually describes work that helps useful pages be discovered and perform in search. GEO commonly describes efforts around generative-search and answer visibility. The labels are less important than the buyer questions, implementation work and outcomes covered by the program.

What does not change: useful, accessible evidence

The product needs clear positioning, accurate feature and pricing information, relevant decision pages and a sensible internal-link structure. A reader should understand who the product serves, how it works and where its limitations are. AI-oriented formatting does not rescue a weak or misleading answer.

Google does not require special AI markup or an AI text file for its AI search features. Indexing and snippet eligibility remain prerequisites there. This is guidance for Google's features, not a guarantee that every other answer engine uses identical requirements.

What changes: how an answer is assembled and presented

A conventional result can send the user directly to a ranked page. An AI experience may summarize sources, answer several subquestions or mention brands without a visit. Some experiences use live web search; others may not do so for a particular question. Treat the actual platform and mode as part of the evaluation.

For content planning, this suggests investigating the connected questions a buyer asks: fit, alternatives, integration, cost, risk and implementation. It does not mean creating thin pages for every variation. One substantial guide can answer several closely related questions when their intent genuinely belongs together.

This table is Photura's operating distinction, not a specification shared by all platforms. Do not assume that a formatting technique or source citation automatically increases visibility. Validate actual discovery and outcomes within a clearly defined scope.

For SaaS, prioritize purchase questions before generic education

Start with the product and service pages that explain fit, then support them with cost, comparison, implementation and risk content. Keep claims consistent across the website, documentation, approved cases and relevant third-party context. A factual contradiction can make both buying and source verification harder.

For an agency site, a useful example is a service page linked to agency selection, quote evaluation and measurement. Those pages answer different procurement questions without duplicating one commercial keyword across the entire library.

Review crawler access without confusing search and training

OpenAI provides independent crawler controls for ChatGPT search discovery and training uses. Check the applicable access policy, robots configuration and infrastructure behavior. A decision about model-training access is not the same as a search-crawling decision.

Also inspect whether important text and links are available to the relevant crawler. Browser-visible content may depend on scripts that some bots cannot execute. Engineering choices should be assessed against observed responses and rendering, not justified by an unsupported claim that every AI platform requires the same technical stack.

Use different observations without losing the business objective

Track organic landing-page performance and qualified demand. For AI observation, keep a defined prompt set and record platform, date, mode and sources. Separate a mention from a citation and either from a referral. Repeat observations where possible and avoid calling a small sample the total market.

Google reports its AI-feature traffic within overall web-search performance in Search Console; do not invent a separately measured AI-only number from that aggregate. Other referral or answer observations also have attribution limits. A favorable screenshot is a visibility observation, not an acquired customer.

Buy complementary work, not duplicate retainers

Photura's pricing reference includes foundational GEO in its SEO Growth Retainer, with advanced AI-visibility work scoped separately. Ask what additional research, content, implementation or reporting an advanced engagement buys and who is responsible for each deliverable.

Use the GEO procurement guide to compare proposals. Our Distribution & Growth service connects search with other channels where the brief needs them. The goal is useful discovery that can support qualified demand—not collecting channel labels or promising control over every AI answer.
